Classes and Races: Spells and Casting

 Section Navigation:  Print

Many classes in Dark Age of Camelot have the ablity to cast spells for either the benefit of themselves and party members or the direct harm to their enemies. Spells have many different types of effects, casting ranges, and casting times. Some of the common spell types are as follows:

Type Description
Area of Effect (AOE) A spell, which is restricted by a radius factor, but hits enemies within that radius around the caster. It typically hits several enemies for smaller damage than a direct damage spell would do.
Bladeturn (BT) A spell, which provides some protection from damage in specific intervals and in some cases it is a one-time only use spell.
Bolt A powerful surge of magical energy that can travel across long distances and cause great damage to the enemy when landed successfully.
Buffs Spells, which enhance the player's abilities and attributes.
Charm Charms a monster of equal or lesser level than the caster to fight by his side. Charmed pets are controllable. Some restrictions apply to what can and cannot be charmed depending on the class.
Damage Over Time (DoT) A poisonous, diseased spell, which inflicts the enemy target with pain at several iterations for a specified amount of time.
Direct Damage (DD) Directly damages the enemy target.
Ground Target Area Effect (GTAE) The caster targets the area of land he wishes to cast upon and the area effect damage is done from that point at a radius instead of around the caster's body.
Heal A spell, which restores the health pool of a player.
Heal Over Time (HoT) A pulsing chant, which returns a certain amount of health to a player's health pool at each pulse.
Mesmerization ("Mezz") The target is unable to control himself for a certain amount of time. It is a crowd controlling spell, in that it can single out a single player or group of players and stop them from being able to retaliate to attacks until they themselves are attacked by the enemy.
Point Blank Area Effect (PBAE) An area effect spell, which does damage with a shorter range than other AoE spells. It is very close-range around the caster's body.
Power Over Time (PoT) A pulsing chant, which returns a certain amount of power to a player's power pool at each pulse.
Resurrection (Rezz) A spell, which resurrects a player from death and returns some health and power to the resurrectee.
Stun Another crowd control spell, which will render the player unable to move or retaliate until the effects have naturally worn off.
Summon Pet A spell used by "pet casters." It summons a pet for the player to control. Some summoning spells don't allow for controls (i.e. Theurgists).

How to Cast a Spell

Click this icon to open your spells catalog
Casting a spell involves creating a hotkey on your hotkey bar with the icon of the spell. If you specialized in a specific line, the spells will now be listed in your spells catalog. To create a hotkey, simply click on the spell's icon, located on the lefthand side of the spell's name, and your cursor will turn into a larger version of the icon.

The macrobar
Now move your cursor to the macrobar on your screen and click in the numbered slot you would like to use as your spell's slot. You can SHIFT + RIGHT CLICK to remove the macro if you don't want your spell in that slot.

To cast, simply do as you would normally do to activate a macro on your hotbar. The keystrokes used to do this are determined by your keyboard setup.
